Miss Know It All

Dear Miss Know-It-All,

I know people write you because they’re unhappy with their jobs, but I actually like mine! My real question is, why don’t I have enough time to write that novel? It seems by the time I’m done with work, it’s all I can do to eat some dinner and go to bed.

            Crunched for Time

Dear Crunched,

First of all, congratulations on enjoying your job. I like mine too! My guess is, because you like what you’re doing, you gladly put in long hours or go the extra mile for your boss. It appears you don’t have time for anything else but that’s just an illusion—honest. Here’s the real question to ask yourself: am I as passionate about writing that novel as I am about my day job? It’s my experience that people with a passion about something find time to make it a part of their lives. So, are you willing to get up an hour early every day and sit in front of the computer, typewriter, or just a paper and pencil and write something?

For people with a passion, their passion is often their way of Relaxing. The L.A.R.K. method uses relaxation as a needed break to nourish your body, mind, and soul. If writing is your passionate relaxation, you’ll feel inspired to work on your novel and it won’t feel like work at all.

Years ago, I worked for the president of a major company. In his spare time, he’d written a highly successful novel, so he continued to get up at 5:00 a.m. every day without fail to write something on that paper before coming into work. Writing was his passion. Try this and let me know how things turn out for you.

Say every day: There is plenty of time to get it done.

I may have done something stupid. Need your advice. When my boss travels, I make his hotel reservations. I never book them under his celebrity name. We actually use his birth name. For example: Cary Grant’s real name was Archibald Leech. So if this was for Mr. Grant, I would book it for Mr. Leech. Well, recently we had a really busy week involving sick pets, broken down cars, an some kind of virus on the computers. It was just one of those crazier than normal weeks. For some reason, I booked his recent hotel under his real name. Eek!
Now he is there and people are calling him at the hotel and finding him because of this! I mean, this isn’t Tom Hanks we’re talking about, but still, if I told you his name, he is famous enough, that this shouldn’t happen. I feel like an idiot.  How do I make this error up to him when he returns next week?

Dear MKIA,IMG_5451

What has your boss, author Louise Hay, been up to lately?

Curious in Cleveland

Dear Curious,

Louise is a young 86 and doing great! Lately she has been taking time to stop and smell the roses. Earlier in the year she gave a seminar with author Cheryl Richardson in Germany, and will be doing more workshops this fall in NYC and California with Dr. Mona Lisa Shultz. But for now she is planning a birthday trip to Hawaii and loving all the free time she has to enjoy her friends, seeing movies, reading books (the pile of books were getting out of hand!), keeping in shape with her pilates classes, trying new recipes in the kitchen and collaborating with some interesting people on new books coming out in 2014. May I have as much energy as she does when I am 86!
